The Southern Potluck Dishes We Still Hope Someone Brings

These old-fashioned Southern potluck favorites remind us of folding tables, sweet tea, and the dishes everybody hoped someone would bring.

One thing I have always loved about a good Southern potluck is that most of the food that showed up wasn’t from some curated Pinterest board. No, it was all about the old-fashioned dishes that have been showing up for years. Somebody always brought the deviled eggs. Somebody always carried in homemade banana pudding. There was usually a casserole dish wrapped in towels to keep it warm, along with a gallon of sweet tea. No one had to assign dishes to specific people because everyone had signature dishes that they had been bringing for years.

These were the dishes that everyone HOPED would show up, and let me tell you….they would be disappointed if they didn’t. You know the ones…the dishes that people asked about before they even fixed their plate.

“Aunt Faye better have made her broccoli casserole! I’ve been looking forward to it for a week.”

They were always the ones that disappeared first. Every family has those dishes. Never once have I been to a family potluck and heard anyone say, “I hope someone brought some new recipes today.” Nope..never. It’s all about those classic old-fashioned dishes we’ve been eating for years. The recipes are wrapped in nostalgia from generations before us. We mustn’t forget them!

The Southern Staples That Always Filled the Table

No southern summer potluck would be complete without a potato salad. It’s definitely a dish that will disappear quickly.

We can’t forget this dish. Are you on team creamy or team vinegar? If you like vinegar, then you’ll love this old-fashioned icebox coleslaw.

“I’ve tried many coleslaw recipes over the years and this is the winner by a landslide. I’ve served it to guests and every single person who’s tasted it asked for the recipe.”-Jan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In our family, this baked bean dish is a must. It’s my signature dish, and I can’t imagine the fallout if this weren’t on the table.

“I love these and so does my family, we don’t eat them any other way more!”-Jenny ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My grandmother kept a bowl of these cucumbers in her refrigerator all summer. Mom did too! There is nothing better on a hot, humid day than reaching in the fridge for a few of these. They are the perfect side dish and a must at any southern potluck.

A summer southern potluck will always include dishes with garden vegetables. Both sets of my grandparents had a huge garden, and squash was plentiful. So a squash casserole always showed up.

This is an old-fashioned dish that has been showing up at southern potlucks for generations. It’s always a hit!

What’s not to love about this vintage salad? It’s a classic, super easy to make, and everyone loves it!

“I made this for every picnic years ago. I make it in a 9X13 pan…so the dressing gets spread out and you get some with each serving. It’s so pretty in a glass bowl, though.”-Balisha ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This Southern Coca-Cola cake is a must! It’s always on the table, and never a piece left when it’s time to go home.

“Made this cake for church today..it’s incredible! Followed the recipe exactly and it turned out perfect.”-Katy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Is it even a summer potluck if a fresh fruit cobbler doesn’t show up? It’s a must!

My grandmother would make this cake for every luncheon, potluck, or holiday. It is a must in our family. It’s the classic southern dessert.

You Tell Us

We’d love to know…What dish do you still hope somebody brings to the summer potluck? The one that instantly reminds you of home.

Around here, we believe food has always been about more than what’s on the plate. That’s a big part of what Front Porch Life magazine is all about, too.

HERE’S THE TRUTH.

In a world full of endless to-dos, it’s easy to feel like we’re always using this moment to prepare for the next, instead of just enjoying the one we’re in.

But real life isn’t meant to be lived that way .

And it’s also not about escaping into some unrealistic, perfectly slow version of life either.

It’s something in between.

Setting aside a few moments – on purpose – to just be. To sit. To read. To enjoy something simple, but meaningful. Because when you do those things, you’re not falling behind. You’re not ignoring real life. And you’re not wasting time.

Those moments of intentional rest – of soaking up life’s simple pleasures – are what help you show up more fully for everything else.

Front Porch Life is that moment.
