The After-School Snacks We Remember from the 80s and 90s

There was something about walking through that door after school. Wrestling your backpack off, slipping out of your shoes and….heading straight to the kitchen!
Not because we were starving… but because that’s just what we did. I can absolutely remember going from the fridge to the cabinet, the pantry, almost in a loop, until I landed on something I wanted. Call it nostalgia or whatever you want…those after-school snacks were so good, and I don’t know why. Maybe it was the era…but I still love some of those snacks today.
The Sweet Treats We Loved
I’ve written several times over the years about growing up in a little country store. Mom ran it for most of our childhood so sweets and snacks were abundant. She always let Anne and me have one snack and a soft drink after school. My go-to was a Little Debbie Oatmeal Pie. I loved them and guess what…I still do! My husband and I both have one after dinner most evenings. Yes, I can make them homemade and so can he, but it’s the nostalgia that keeps me buying them, and let’s be honest…the convenience.
Of course, there were times when we got lucky, and Mom had something homemade waiting on the counter. Sometimes it was a big piece of cake or maybe a few homemade chocolate chip cookies. She worked 80 hours a week, so that was a real treat! Other times, it was some concoction that we put together. I loved several spoonfuls of peanut butter in a bowl with maple syrup over it….that was one of my favorites!
The Salty & Simple Snacks
Sometimes it was a sleeve of Saltines with peanut butter, or crackers with mayo and cheese. Oftentimes, it was my favorite….a fried bologna sandwich! When I was in high school, I became obsessed with cheese hot dogs. Remember those? They were hot dogs with the cheese IN them. I would put them in the microwave for a minute and practically burn them up…love, love, loved them!
Remember Bagel Bites or Hot Pockets? Oh, and of course, we can’t forget Pizza Rolls…I still like them from time to time. I used to LOVE a pepperoni Totino’s pizza. I would practically burn it and could eat one by myself (still can!).
Turns Out We All Ate The Same Things
The funniest part about writing this article was realizing we all apparently had the exact same after-school menu growing up.
I ended up down a Reddit rabbit hole reading a thread called “1990s Snacks for a Lower Middle Class Tween Home Alone,” and I laughed out loud more than once because the comments were so true. You can read the whole thread here if you want a serious nostalgia trip. Reddit thread about 90s after-school snacks
The responses felt less like a snack list and more like a time capsule from the 80s and 90s. People mentioned everything from fudge rounds and sour cream & onion chips to frozen burritos from the gas station. One person said they “lived off of fudge rounds, sour cream and onion chips and $.25 cent burritos,” which sounds exactly right for that time period.
And then someone mentioned Hormel canned tamales and I nearly lost it because… SAME!! Those little canned tamales wrapped in paper somehow felt like a full meal after school. Looking back now, I truly don’t know how we survived on some of this stuff, but at the time, it was the greatest thing you’d ever eaten.
There were also mentions of Easy Mac, Ding Dongs, Otter Pops, microwave ham sandwiches, ramen noodles, toaster oven tacos with melted American cheese, and saltine crackers with butter and mustard.
One comment may have summed up the entire experience best:
“Somehow everything was stale, but we ate it anyway.”
Honestly… that might be the most accurate description of growing up in the 80s and 90s I’ve ever heard.
Maybe We’re Still Trying to Recreate That Feeling
The funny thing is, I think a lot of us are still chasing those same after-school snack feelings a little bit. Maybe that’s why homemade oatmeal cream pies still hit so hard, or why a pan of lunch lady brownies can immediately take you back to a school cafeteria table in about two bites.
And honestly? Some things never change. Give me homemade pimento cheese and a sleeve of crackers (stale or not), and I’m still happy. There’s just something comforting about simple food that doesn’t try too hard, and the memories we cherish.
So if all this talk about after-school snacks has you feeling nostalgic, here are a few recipes that taste a little like those afternoons growing up.

Food can instantly take us back to a certain time and place in our lives. How wonderful is that? We can long for the “good ole” days yet still have them with us for a brief moment in the food we prepare every day, or maybe on just a special occasion.
A Little More of This, If You’re Looking for It
These are the type of conversations we love. Reminiscing about a time in life that maybe was a bit simpler or maybe we just remember it that way.
That’s a big part of what we share inside Front Porch Life.
This year especially, we’ve been sharing more stories about our mom’s country store, the memories connected to it, and the everyday moments that shaped the way we cook, gather, and live today. If this article felt a little like home to you, we’d love to have you join us there.
