Thereโs something special about returning to a favorite book! This summer, weโre revisiting the books that once kept us up reading late into the night. After scouring book groups on Facebook and Reddit forums, we’ve come up with a few favorites! These are the books we took to the beach in the ’80s and ’90s, the ones we lent to friends with dog-eared pages and never got back. Samantha Taylor seemingly has it all until life takes an unexpected turn. This tale of heartbreak, healing, and starting over in the American West is one of Steel’s most memorable early works. *I read this book years ago and loved it!
2. The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher
Penelope Keeling reflects on her past as her children squabble over a valuable family painting. Pilcher’s richly detailed storytelling makes this a sweeping, emotional journey through time and memory. *Although this book came out in 1987, it’s still very popular in Facebook reading groups.
3. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg
An aging woman befriends a nursing home resident and uncovers the spirited tale of Idgie and Ruth, two women who ran a Southern cafe in the 1930s. A novel full of warmth, wit, and wisdom that spans generations. *I never read the book, but LOVED the movie!
4. The Wedding by Dorothy West
Set in Martha’s Vineyard, this story explores race, class, and family dynamics within a wealthy Black community. It’s an insightful, elegant novel that continues to resonate today.
5. Evening Class by Maeve Binchy
A group of Dublin strangers come together for Italian lessons and end up changing each otherโs lives. Binchy delivers her signature charm and emotional depth in this interwoven tale.
6. Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy
Spanning forty years, this is the story of turbulent Tom Wingo, his gifted and troubled twin sister Savannah, and the dark and violent past of the extraordinary family into which they were born. *One of the best books I’ve ever read. I highly recommend diving in immediately.
7. Summer Sisters by Judy Blume
Childhood friends Vix and Caitlin share dreamy summer adventures in Marthaโs Vineyard. But as they grow older, their relationship is tested by secrets, choices, and love. *I had forgotten about this book and definitely need to read it again!
8. Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani
Ave Maria lives a quiet life as a pharmacist in a small Virginia town until unexpected news turns her world upside down. This is a heartwarming, quirky story about community, identity, and second chances. *Loved this book and LOVED the movie! I highly recommend grabbing some treats and having a movie night with this one.
9. All That Remains by Patricia Cornwell
Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta investigates the murders of young lovers found along secluded roads. This suspenseful mystery is as chilling as it is smart. *This is part of a series. This summer would be a great time to read them all.
10. The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
A multigenerational family drama centered around forbidden love between a young woman and a Catholic priest. Set in the Australian outback, this epic novel is both tragic and unforgettable. *One of my mother’s favorites!
11. On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah
Annie Colwater returns to her hometown after her marriage falls apart, where she reconnects with an old flame. This emotional journey of self-discovery is Hannah at her best.
12. Suddenly by Barbara Delinsky
A close-knit community is rocked by the suicide of a young mother, forcing her friends to reevaluate their lives. Delinsky crafts a moving story about friendship, motherhood, and redemption.
13. The Honk and Holler Opening Soon by Billie Letts

16. Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts
Seventeen-year-old Novalee Nation is abandoned at Walmart, where she quietly builds a life and community. This novel of resilience, kindness, and found family is full of heart. *I loved the movie but never read the book.
