WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

Cheese dreams have been around for a long time. Pick up any old church cookbook, and you’ll probably see them. The best thing about them is that not only are they absolutely delicious, but they are very simple to prepare. They are made with very simple ingredients you likely already have at home. They are always a favorite when we serve them.

KEY INGREDIENTS

  • Finely grated sharp Cheddar cheese
  • Butter, softened
  • Heavy cream
  • Egg
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt
  • Dry mustard
  • Hot sauce to taste
  • Firm white sandwich bread slices

HOW TO PREPARE:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Mix cheese and butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until blended. Then mix in heavy cream and all the other ingredients (excluding the bread).
  2. Cut crusts from white bread slices; cut each slice into 4 squares. Spread the cheese mixture on half of the bread squares; top it with another square of bread to create a mini sandwich. Spread the remaining mixture over the top and sides of the sandwiches. Next, place the sandwiches on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  3. Bake at 375°F for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

TIPS:

You can use any shape you like when making these mini sandwiches. I used a biscuit cutter to make some of them round. If you want to make them for the holidays, use a star-shaped cutter.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can I use a different flavor cheese?

YES! Just make sure it is a high temp cheese and will actually melt. These would be great with white cheddar.

Can I make them ahead of time?

Yes, you can make them up a day before and store them in the refrigerator. Then just place them in the oven when you’re ready to serve them. They do freeze well too.

  1. I’ve been making these for almost 50 years! ?
I received the Southern Living Party Cookbook (originally published in 1972) as a birthday present from my mother-in-law. As a 21 year-old newlywed, I thought I was very fancy making these Cheese Dreams! A wonderful quick and easy appetizer!

Cheese dreams have been around for a long time. I have a church cookbook from the 60’s with a recipe for them. It added ham. They are delicious!
