โ€œAt my grandma’s house, we had dessert after supper every day. It was a cookie with ice cream. It is still my go-to.โ€Leslie

โ€œMy grandma and I used to always have a vegetable dinner in the summer. We would snap green beans, have corn on the cob, and then have parsley potatoes. Now I do your beans and potatoes (itโ€™s by far my favorite), and then I still do corn on the cob. I never got to do the beans and potatoes recipe for my grandma while she was alive, but I know she would have loved it.โ€-Nikki

โ€œOur family summer dessert growing up and even now is schaum torte filled with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and lots of whipped cream. ย  My dad is already requesting it.โ€-Deborahย

โ€œEvery summer, I went to stay with my grandparents for 2 weeks. My grandmother got up every morning at 3:15 to start breakfast. As soon as I smelled bacon or sausage, I would get up to help her.ย  My granddad ate breakfast before sunrise so he had enough time to go to the farthest field by daylight and work his way back home.ย  He would hitch one or two mules, depending on what he was going to do, and wrap the reins around the back of his neck.ย  We would go to the corn field first and work the vegetables.ย  Then we would make it to the fruit trees and finally to the watermelon patch where he would break a melon over his knees. We would sit there in the patch resting and eating the most delicious watermelons. It quenched our thirst and gave us a bite to eat. We would scoop it out with our bare hands.ย  He may have never learned how to use mechanical equipment, but he sure knew how to use those mules. He would feed them and rest them in the shade while we took a break.ย  I wish I could go back in time to those days. It was the best days of the whole summer.โ€-Linda

โ€œThe most favorite memories of summer soul nourishment for our family began at Memorial Day…cookouts, screened porch dinners and “all things red, white and blue!โ€ Hamburgers, hot dogs, all the”fixins,” potato salad, pasta salad, a seasonal melon ball + berry medley served in an artistically designed sawtooth edge hand-carved watermelon basket/bowl, baked beans with latticed bacon atop, corn souffle or corn on the cob,ย  brownies, pound cake variety, homemade vanilla ice cream…and of course, Daddy’s Homemade Peach Ice Cream, sprinkled with the most glorious chunks of fresh, in-season peaches!ย  We think he and Momma always loved making that flavor of ice cream to continuously celebrate the blessing of being “Georgia Peaches”, living in Georgia! If you were nearby, you would be invited to join us! Come grab a mason jar with the best sweet iced tea…lemon? mint? Sure enough! All ready and waiting for you!โ€-Karen

“My Favorite is a chocolate snowball with lots of marshmallow.ย  In summer, my grandmother had a snowball stand.โ€-Sharon

โ€œOne of my favorite memories during hot summer days is my Uncle Buddy. He had a hand-held ice scraper and a large block of ice. The kids would line up to wait their turn to receive the icy-cold treat, topped with chocolate syrup, which we mixed into the fresh, shaved ice.ย Perfect!โ€-Donna

โ€œThis takes me way back to my grandma’s growing up in Tennessee. Every summer, she would make fried catfish on Friday.ย  We would walk to her house, and the smell of those catfish frying would make your mouth water! She would make these big potato wedges, and make her homemade slaw, and macaroni and tomatoes with onions,ย  and she would have a whole stack of fried pies for dessert! She made the best catfish I have ever tasted. We would all sit around the table and talk about what had been going on throughout the week.ย  I remember she always wanted to include us kids in the family conversation.ย  I have cherished those memories all these years. And I still have fried catfish every Friday, the potato wedges, and everything else except the fried pies. I have never been able to make her pies. But I still carry on this tradition to this day, I started my Friday catfish suppers a couple of weeks ago,ย  and will continue until the end of September.โ€-Vernon

โ€œGoing to see my dadโ€™s side of the family in NC.ย  Having a hand-cranked homemade ice cream! ย  Sitting on top to keep the bar across the ice cream maker so it wouldnโ€™t jump up. As I got bigger I had my turn cranking the ice cream!ย  Still was wonderful.ย  Everyone there eating Al fresco with the cicadas’ noise in the background!ย  Still makes me smile.ย  Thank God for my Cuisinart Ice cream maker now! โ€œ-Sha

โ€œMy mom used to make us Boston Coolersโ€ฆ a half of a cantaloupe with the center filled with vanilla ice cream. It was quite a treat. My husbandโ€™s grandmother used to boil a can of sweetened condensed milk (in the can for about an hour), then open both ends of the can and push out the cooled, delightful caramel, then slice it into 1/2-inch slices.ย  On a desert plate, she would first put a leaf of lettuce, then a slice of canned pineapple, then a slice of caramel with whipped cream and a cherry on topโ€ฆ. We thought it was so fancy!!โ€-Sandi

โ€œMy favorite food tradition was waking up in the morning, looking out the window at the tops of the trees, and the scent of coffee and bacon coming from the kitchen downstairs. This and the sound of voices made me feel secure as a child.โ€-Bonnie

โ€œBanana Cream Pie and Vinegar Cole Slaw!โ€-Kathy

โ€œIn the summer, my mom would make orange Jello with shredded carrots and pineapple in it.ย  I loved it, but was always embarrassed about it because I thought it was weird to have vegetables (carrots) in Jello and thought it was some strange concoction my mom had made up.ย  Now, as an adult, It is still one of my favorite ways to enjoy Jello!โ€-Susan

โ€œThe most memorable times with grandma was picking gooseberries and cutting rhubarb.  We knew that the next thing would be helping with the baking of rhubarb and gooseberry pie. There is nothing more delicious than this pie with fresh churned ice cream and a big slab of cheddar cheese on top. Made for an enjoyable Sunday afternoon.โ€-Gene

โ€œI remember having homemade ice cream almost every weekendโ€ฆ always with the White Mountain crank freezer.ย  So delicious vanilla, peach, strawberry, banana.โ€-Judy

โ€œSouthern memories.ย  My family and my cousinโ€™s family would meet at my grandparents’ house on a Saturday afternoon.ย  We all lived right there together on a side street in our town. It was the late 50โ€™s.ย  We did not BBQ.ย  We called it โ€œ grillinโ€™ hamburgersโ€. ย  Not large, soft, medium burgers of today.ย  They were well done.ย  And if not, throw them back on the grill!ย  When done enough, put on a bun with ketchup, yellow mustard ( was there another kind?), lettuce, onion, and tomato.ย  There was always potato salad with boiled eggs and cut-up homemade sweet pickles, mayonnaise, and onion.ย  Baked beans with ketchup, yellow mustard, brown sugar, onion and bacon.ย  Afterwards, a watermelon was cut and we grew up sprinkling salt on it.ย  I still eat it that way.ย ย

Kids under eight were spitting seeds and joking about swallowing seeds!ย  But to end the meal, Grandma brought out her famous to us pound cake!!!

No one in the family could top her pound cake!ย  On occasions, there was fruitcake still left from the holidays.ย  It was wrapped in brown paper and smelled of bourbon!ย  Only the older relatives found that to their liking.ย  We all drank sweet tea.ย  Lord only knows how much sugar it took to get it right!โ€-Sharon
