Should Guests Take Their Shoes Off in Your House?
Dear Front Porch Life,
I grew up in a house where we never asked guests to remove their shoes. Unless your shoes were muddy or wet, you simply walked in and made yourself at home. Honestly, I don’t remember anyone even thinking twice about it.
But over the years, I’ve noticed that several of my friends have a completely different take. At their homes, shoes come off at the door, and they even ask guests, “Would you mind taking your shoes off?” To them, wearing shoes through someone’s house is flat rude!
Now I’m curious. When you’re having company over, is it okay for guests to keep their shoes on, or should everyone take them off at the door? And if you’re a shoes-off household, is it okay to actually ask your guests to remove them?

Around The Porch
This is a great question and we know people have very strong opinions about this one.. and people are always shocked by what other’s believe. Honestly it was kind of funny to receive this question because this is a conversation we have had a few times, since everyone feels differently about it.. BUT.. they feel strongly about it too.
We all had the same answer.. NO.. we have never asked anyone to take their shoes off in our homes. It’s just not who we are and I always think back to my petite adorable Southern grandmother, who never wore pants and can’t imagine someone asking her to take her heels off to walk about their home.. she would have been appalled! We base a lot of our views on what she would have thought if someone asked our Grandmother.
I will say, we live on a farm, we have dirty feet and yes, I slip my shoes off at the door and usually put on my house slippers, but if I have on my tennis shoes I don’t take them off at the door. I would never ask someone who had on regular shoes to take them off and anyone I know that has mud on their shoes, would just take them off, they would never need to be asked. Growing up on farm, in the winter you would put on 3 layers of clothes, wool socks, and lace up rubber boots and be “ready” for the day. We always rinsed our boots off at the barn, but no way was any of us taking them on and off each time we had to run in the house to get something.
I lived in southern Illinois one summer during college and you couldn’t walk in anyone’s house with your shoes on. It was the most foreign concept to me since I was not raised that way. I had to be reminded over and over again. We would come in from the farm after working all morning for a quick lunch and it was immediately “take your shoes off”. Honestly.. it was irritating, I mean they shoes weren’t dirty and we were going right back out! haha.
I remember having this debate in college and many of our friends that were from the Midwest insisted you take your shoes off.. so is this a midwestern thing? Or is this just household to household?
